Dr. Edward Siew’s research program is focused on improving the care and outcomes of patients who experience acute kidney injury (AKI). He has received funding through the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs, and Department of Defense. Notable areas of investigation have included novel approaches to validating biological markers for the diagnosis and prognosis of AKI, new methods for phenotyping of AKI using electronic health records, understanding the genetic basis for susceptibility to AKI, and groundbreaking studies of the long-term outcomes and care gaps experienced by patients who survive an episode of AKI.
He has been a key investigator in several NIH-sponsored networks of patients with AKI including the ASSESS-AKI and COPE-AKI studies, participated in practice-changing clinical trials in AKI in collaboration with members of the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine and ongoing trials on improving outcomes for patients with moderate to severe AKI. Dr. Siew has served as an associate editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and on the editorial board for Kidney International and as an expert on advisory panels including overseeing the development of a National Veterans Affairs Renal Registry and international consensus meetings for AKI including the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO).
Dr. Siew is a Principal Investigator in the Million Veteran Program, a national research endeavor within the Veterans Affairs to understand the genetic basis for susceptibility to disease focused on improving the phenotyping of AKI in genetic studies.
He received his medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at The University of California, San Francisco. He also completed fellowships in Critical Care Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Nephrology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and is a graduate of its Master of Science in Clinical Investigation program.
