Professional bio

Mary Margaret Chren, MD, attended Smith College; after medical school at Yale, she completed residencies in Internal Medicine at Stanford and in Dermatology at University Hospitals in Cleveland. She trained in research in clinical epidemiology, and has an active research program focused on the measurement and improvement of complex health outcomes such as patients’ experience of illness. Her research group developed Skindex, a widely used skin-related quality-of-life tool.

Dr. Chren headed the Program for Clinical Research in Dermatology at UCSF, where she was Professor of Dermatology. She came to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2018 as the inaugural Robert N. and Rachelle Buchanan and A.H. and Lucile Lancaster Chair in Dermatology.

Her areas of expertise include general dermatology, acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, and other inflammatory skin diseases, and melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
