C. Michael Stein, MBChB, FRCP (Edin), is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He trained in internal medicine, rheumatology, and clinical pharmacology in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and at Vanderbilt. He holds the Dan May Chair in Medicine and is an established physician-scientist and clinical pharmacologist.
Dr. Stein’s work uses translational approaches to define the mechanisms underlying interindividual variability in drug response and toxicity and has resulted in more than 250 publications in journals that include Lancet, NEJM, and JAMA. He served as editor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the official journal of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics from 2002 to 2006. He was elected to the Association of American Physicians and is an ISI (Clarivate) Highly Cited Researcher (2017-2021). He has served on many NIH study sections and has directed a NIAMS-funded P60, a NIGMS-funded PPG, a multi-center NIH-funded clinical trial, and a T32 training program.
An important part of Dr. Stein’s career focuses on mentoring; his excellence as a teacher was recognized with a Clinical Pharmacology Faculty Teaching Award, and he directed the Clinical Pharmacology T32 training program for many years (2005-2019). He previously served as Assistant Dean for Clinical and Translational Research Scientist Development. Based on his mentoring experience, Dr. Stein has written a book: Not Discussed - The unspoken rules for a career in academic medical research, that provides guidance for early career investigators.
