Professional bio
Qiuyin Cai, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree from the Shanghai Medical University, his MS in Nutrition from the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, and his PhD in Environmental Health/Toxicology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He also received post-doctoral training in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at UAB.
Dr. Cai’s research program focuses on investigating the contribution of host susceptibility and lifestyle factors to the etiology and disparities of various cancers, particularly lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers. He has been both consistently and well-funded by the NIH and DOD since 2002. Currently, he is the PI/MPI for four large molecular/genetic epidemiology studies (R01CA207466, R01CA249863, R01MD015396, and U01CA262678) to identify genetic factors and biomarkers for cancer risks and disparities. He also serves as site PI for several NIH-funded projects and a key co-investigator for many other NIH-funded research grants. The major theme of Dr. Cai’s research program is to identify genetic and molecular markers as well as lifestyle and socioeconomic factors for cancer risks and disparities and to understand the potential mechanisms of cancer development and progression.
Dr. Cai serves as the Director of the Molecular Epidemiology Core Laboratory at the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center and is co-director of the Survey and Biospecimen Shared Resource at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. He has extensive experience directing the biorepository operations of large cohorts and case-control studies and has directed genotyping assays, next-generation sequencing assays, biomarker assays, and in vitro functional assays for multiple large-scale genetic and molecular epidemiology studies. Dr. Cai has been invited to serve on multiple NIH and DOD study sections. He is also active as an editor and manuscript reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals, and has authored more than 470 published manuscripts.
