Welcome to the DeFilippis Lab

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Our lab strives for a comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology of all types of myocardial injury, including myocardial infarcations (MI).

Research in the lab of Dr. Andrew DeFilippis delves into the identification of risk factors which predispose patients to each subtype of the MI or non-ischemic myocardial injury events that will allow for enhanced prediction, prevention, and treatment strategies for these leading causes of death.

Myocardial infarctions, commonly known as heart attacks, occur when the heart muscle doesn’t receive enough oxygen due to myocardial ischemia.

In accordance with data provided by the CDC, it is estimated that on an annual basis, approximately 805,000 individuals within the United States experience a myocardial infarction.
