Dr. Smith specializes in pediatric cardiac critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where he serves as medical director of the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) and chief of the division of cardiac critical care medicine. He joined the hospital staff in 2021.

He was previously medical director of the CICU, associate chief of staff and executive medical director for quality and safety at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee. He was also associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles related to the care of critically ill children with heart disease. His research interests include exploring the impact of organizational factors upon cardiac intensive care unit outcomes and understanding genomic contributions to arrhythmias following congenital heart surgery. 

Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed an internship and residency in general pediatrics, a clinical fellowship in pediatric cardiology and a clinical fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. He also completed a senior clinical fellowship in cardiac critical care at Boston Children’s Hospital. He earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and a Master of Management in Health Care from Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management.
