Dr. Andrea Havens Ramirez received a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina State University in 2002 with a major in biochemistry and minor in economics. She then continued at Duke University School of Medicine, during which period she also spent research time at the Rockefeller University in New York City studying genetics of cardiovascular disease and the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon, West Africa, supporting a malaria vaccine trial and Helicobacter pylori transmission research.
Dr, Ramirez earned her Doctorate of Medicine from Duke in 2007 and joined the Vanderbilt University Harrison Society Research Pathway residency in internal medicine followed by fellowship in clinical pharmacology focusing on pharmcogenomics in the laboratory of Dan Roden, M.D. She completed her Master of Science in Clinical Investigation in 2011 then joined the Physician Scientist Development Program at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, M.D., in the laboratory of Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D. There she studied extracellular R.N.A. signaling in metabolic disease and therapy and completed a joint clinical fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, earning her board certification in 2015.
Dr. Ramirez returned to Vanderbilt in 2016 to join their efforts advancing the Precision Medicine Initiative and advancing personalized therapies for metabolic disease.
