Todd Hulgan, MD, MPH, is a physician-scientist and tenured Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is also Infectious Disease Section Chief at the Veterans Affairs-Tennessee Valley Healthcare System.

The primary goal of Dr. Hulgan’s research is to improve the health of people with HIV by better understanding, predicting, preventing, and treating complications of HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy. He has pursued this goal through observational cohort studies, both large multi-site and targeted local cohorts, and prospective clinical trials of HIV-infected persons.

Dr. Hulgan's research focus has been translational mitochondrial genomics. He has been PI of NIH-funded collaborative projects to expand our understanding of the role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variation in diverse HIV-related outcomes and has authored more than 100 manuscripts. Current phenotypes of interest are neurocognition and metabolic diseases. The ultimate vision for this work is to provide new knowledge and genomic tools that inform a “precision-medicine” approach to treatment and management of an aging population of persons with HIV.

Dr. Hulgan has also been involved in non-HIV related research in other areas of infectious diseases and immune function that impact veteran populations. He maintains an active clinical and teaching program. He has cared for patients with HIV for more than 20 years, mentors Infectious Diseases fellows each year in the Nashville VA Clinics and attends regularly on inpatient Infectious Disease consult and general medical services.
