Vivian K. Kawai, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her MD degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru and her MPH degree from École de Santé Publique, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), in Brussels, Belgium.
Dr. Kawai works in the area of inflammation and inflammatory disorders with a particular focus on genetics and the safety and efficacy of drugs. She demonstrated that patients with lupus have an increased rate of aspirin resistance compared to matched controls individuals and subsequently she established the limited utility of standard cardiovascular risk prediction models to identify individuals with elevated cardiovascular risk among patients with autoimmune disease.
Her research focuses on how genetic variability affects complex traits with a strong inflammatory component in the presence and absence of drugs and other environmental factors using large datasets such the Vanderbilt University Medical Center electronic health record system (Synthetic Derivative) and biobank (BioVU), as well as publicly available omics datasets.
