Establishment of insulin-producing β cells during development occurs through two processes, neogenesis and proliferation. During embryonic development new β cells form by neogenesis; however, beginning at late gestation, β-cell proliferation becomes the predominant mechanism for new β-cell formation. My dissertation research focuses on elucidating the role of the C-terminal protein interaction domain of the pancreas transcription factor Pdx1 and its interacting partners Oc1 and SPOP during these two processes of β-cell formation.
