Eman Gohar, PhD, earned her degrees in Pharmacology and Toxicology at Alexandria University in Egypt under the mentorship of Dr. Mahmoud El-Mas. In 2014, Dr. Gohar joined Dr. David Pollock’s laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for her postdoctoral training. During the first five months at UAB she was awarded an American Heart Association (AHA) Postdoctoral Fellowship (2015-2017). In 2018, Dr. Gohar transitioned to an instructor position at UAB and was awarded an AHA Career Development Award that she terminated early due to funding of her K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Grant.
Dr. Gohar is interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying sex differences in hypertension and associated cardiovascular and renal disease. Her current research is particularly focused on sex differences in the regulation of blood pressure and renal sodium handling by purinergic signaling and rapid estrogen signaling. Dr. Gohar uncovered a novel female-specific role for G protein-coupled estrogen receptors in promoting natriuresis.
Over the last three years, Dr. Gohar discovered that activation of G-protein coupled estrogen receptors (GPER) in the medulla of the kidney stimulates sodium excretion. This observation uncovers a novel pro-natriuretic factor and establishes the foundation for intrarenal estrogen signaling as an important regulator for renal sodium handling and blood pressure.
Dr. Gohar anticipates expanding her research into a broader range of sex differences in cardiovascular and renal systems with the goal of developing sex-specific therapies for cardiovascular and kidney-related diseases.
