Professional bio

Carlan Romney, a 2nd year graduate student in the Cancer Biology Program, was born in the US Virgin Islands and raised in Anguilla. He received his BS in Biology from the University of the Virgin Islands. As a postbaccalaureate student, he completed a year-long research experience at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He completed a MS in Biology from Fisk University as part the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program. He is be studying the role of spermine oxidase (SMOX) as a source of acrolein and electrophilic stress in myeloid cells. Additionally, he will examine the role of the transcription factor, NRF2, as its activation may occur via electrophilic stress, and its effects on the gastric mucosal immune response, and in the gastric cancer tumor microenvironment. Outside of the lab, he enjoys trying new restaurants, outdoor activities, cooking, and traveling.
