SEMINARS

Lab Meeting

We have weekly lab meetings, during which one person presents current research or experimental methods.  Monthly, we discuss new journal articles from a variety of scientific journals that apply to our research area or are of general interest.

We frequently attend the following seminars:

Molecular Physiology & Biophysics Departmental Seminar  During the school year, the department hosts a weekly seminar in which graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present their work.

Cell & Developmental Biology Works in Progress Seminar  During the school year, the department hosts a weekly seminar in which graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present their work.

Beta Cell Interest Group  During the school year, multiple laboratories interested in all aspects of beta cell biology get together weekly to present and discuss current research that is being performed in their laboratories.  Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and PIs present.

Diabetes, Endocrinology, & Metabolism Grand Rounds  During the school year, this weekly meeting offers a variety of seminar topics, ranging from basic science to clinical topics.  Presenters include physicians and PIs.

Developmental Biology Research Seminar  During the school year, this monthly seminar is a chance for PIs to present work that is being performed in their laboratories to members of the Program in Developmental Biology.

Molecular Physiology & Biophysics Seminar  During the school year, this weekly seminar invites visiting speakers and Vanderbilt PIs to discuss current research in their laboratories.

Cell & Developmental Biology Departmental Seminar  During the school year, on a weekly basis, the department invites an outside speaker to present their laboratory's research.

Diabetes Research and Training Center Seminar  During the school year, this weekly seminar invites visiting speakers and Vanderbilt faculty to discuss current research in their laboratories.

Developmental Biology Journal Club  This weekly meeting runs year-round and is an opportunity for members of the Program in Developmental Biology to present and discuss a new journal article that impacts the field.  Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present.

Developmental Biology Research in Construction  During the school year, this bi-weekly meeting is a chance for graduate students in the Program in Developmental Biology to present ideas, methods, and data for their thesis projects in an informal setting among other graduate students in order to get feedback on their approaches and interpretations.

RETREATS

Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics Annual Retreat  This retreat is usually held at a state park. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have the opportunity to present their work orally and via posters.

Department of Cell & Developmental Biology Annual Retreat  This retreat is held at the student life center.  Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have the opportunity to present their work orally and via posters.

Program in Developmental Biology Annual Retreat  This retreat is usually held at a state park.  Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and PIs have the opportunity to present their work orally and via posters.  Several laboratories from St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital also attend.

MEETINGS

Members of our laboratory commonly attend and present at the following meetings:

American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions  This is a very large national meeting that brings together healthcare providers, clinical researchers, and basic science researchers to discuss topics on all aspects of diabetes.

Society for Developmental Biology Annual Meeting  This is a national meeting that attracts leaders in the field of developmental biology.

Keystone Symposia  This is a series of national meetings that cover an extremely wide variety of research interests.
Members of our laboratory have attended the Islet and Beta Cell Biology Meeting, as well as the Islet and Beta Cell Development and Transplantation Meeting.

Society for Developmental Biology Southeast Regional Meeting  This is a smaller meeting for schools in the Southeast region of the United States.

We have also attended the following meetings:

Midwest Islet Club Annual Conference  The goal of this meeting is to foster greater communication between pancreatic beta cell biology investigators within the region. The meeting is composed of both senior and junior investigators, with a decided focus towards students, postdocs and newly independent investigators serving as speakers.

AFFILIATIONS

Diabetes Research & Training Center (DRTC) The DRTC at Vanderbilt is one of a network of Core Centers established by the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to conduct research and training in diabetes mellitus and related endocrine and metabolic disorders. The Vanderbilt DRTC is a multi-disciplinary program with 95 participating faculty members distributed among 14 departments in 2 schools and 3 colleges of the University.

Digestive Disease Research Center (DDRC) The DDRC is a multi-disciplinary center at Vanderbilt developed to promote research in digestive diseases in an integrative, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary manner, in hopes of facilitating the transfer of basic research findings to the clinical area.
