Ming-Zhi Zhang, MD, MSc, FASN, FAHA, works in the field of hormonal regulation of renal physiological and pathophysiological functions. He has investigated the regulation of renal cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by different hormones including angiotensin II, dopamine, glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, vasopressin, and others.

His research reveals novel roles of intrarenal dopaminergic system in regulation of renin-angiotensin system, hypertension and longevity. His research on the role of renal myeloid cell (macrophages and neutrophils) COX-2 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) systems in recovery from acute kidney injury and subsequent development of renal fibrosis provides a new paradigm for acute injury recovery. Dr. Zhang and Dr. Raymond C Harris have developed a spontaneous, early, and progressive renal fibrosis model.
